The one where somebody finally had a proper look around

A visitor came back four times on Saturday and finally did a proper lap of the site, the forum marks a month of total silence, and buy-swap-sell is still waiting on the item James has now promised twice.

The Club · One month in, and the quiet is getting loud

The forum has been live for a month and has not had a single thread in it.

Thirty-one days since the forum went live, and the thread count sits exactly where it started: zero. Not one post, not one reply, not even the obligatory is-this-thing-on that every forum on earth gets within the hour. Membership is still two accounts, one of them James, the other the test login most of you have worked out by now, which at least explains the quiet, but does not excuse it.

We're not going to call this early days. Early days was three issues ago. This is just a page, open for a month, declining every invitation to be used.

One loose end, tidied: the pile-up of five visitors who hit the homepage within fifteen seconds of each other a fortnight ago has not happened again. We floated a bot sweep at the time. It is going back to being nothing in particular.

First post in the forum, on any subject, gets a reply from an actual person within the hour. We're not proud. We're available.

Pubs · Still the one

The pub map has not grown, and nobody has rung the landlord yet.

The map holds the same single listing it held last week, the week before that, and the week before that: a real address, added by nobody who actually runs the place. The profile sitting behind it is, if anything, embarrassingly thorough — quiz night, trade day, a resident food van, prices down to the Guinness — all of it waiting for an owner who has not been asked whether they want it.

Somebody needs to make that phone call. That somebody is James. He knows.

The Bands · Unchanged, as billed

The same two acts that turned up in the same second three weeks ago are still the entire directory.

Free pages, no fee, nothing stopping anybody signing up, and the bands directory has not moved since the pair that arrived together down to the timestamp. Three weeks is long enough that we have stopped describing it as new and started describing it as the roster.

We will keep calling it a directory rather than a lineup until it earns the second word.

Gigs · Eleven gigs, one PA, one lesson

A four-piece in Scunthorpe lost the PA two lines from the end of their last song and the room didn't notice.

Eleven gigs on the listings this week, most of them the sort that pass without incident, which is the correct amount of incident for a pub gig. The exception was a four-piece in Scunthorpe whose PA died two lines from the end of the closing song. The singer carried on unaccompanied, the drummer kept time on the rim, and a room forty people deep did not appear to register that anything had changed.

Somebody filmed it on a phone held sideways. It is, unhelpfully, the best the band has ever sounded.

Vinyl Night · Four weeks, zero entries

Nobody has logged a vinyl night in a month, and the crowns table is gathering the kind of dust records are supposed to have anyway.

Four weeks of real data now, and the vinyl-night tables have recorded nothing in any of them: no nights opened, no records played, no crowns awarded. This is the longest any part of the site has gone completely silent.

Vinyl nights are the reason the site exists. We'd like that noted somewhere other than this paragraph.

Buy, Swap, Sell · Third week, same promise

The page James said he would put something on, twice, still has nothing on it.

Buy-swap-sell has now gone two issues with a promise attached to it and nothing to show for either. We are not making it three. If an item appears on that page before next Monday, it will be the first thing in six weeks that happened because somebody said it would, and we will say so plainly. Until then it remains exactly as empty as it has been since the three records James added to his own shelf in week two, none of which were ever for sale.

Say nothing and it's forgotten. Say something twice and not do it is a pattern. We've noticed the difference.

List something: thesnug-club.co.uk/buy-swap-sell. It takes less time than reading this paragraph did.

Quizzes · The first fully blank week

Nobody attempted the daily quiz at all this week, which has not happened before.

Every previous week has had at least one attempt in it — James, a guest, somebody passing through — and this is the first with none. No correct answers, no wrong ones, no anonymous guest getting it right on a Tuesday and vanishing, which had quietly become our favourite recurring character.

We'd rather report a wrong answer than an empty one. A wrong answer means somebody tried.

Karaoke · One singer, two names, one duet

A woman in Dudley booked two consecutive karaoke slots under two different names so she could duet with herself.

She did both parts of a duet, alternating lines by stepping half a pace left and half a pace right, and was convincing enough at both halves that two members of the pub quiz team genuinely believed it was two different women. Nobody corrected them until she took her bow.

This is, by some distance, the most efficient use of a karaoke slot we have on record.

Pub Events · The pickled egg has a following now

A pub in Workington has run the same guess-the-age-of-the-pickled-egg competition for six years and nobody has ever won it.

Entry is fifty pence, the egg is allegedly original, and the landlord will neither confirm nor deny whether a new egg has quietly replaced the old one at any point in six years. The nearest guess so far was out by four years. The far end of the jar has started to take on a certain reputation.

We've added it to the events page under ongoing, which feels like the only honest category for it.

Merch · Reported straight, no comparison attached

Zero products, zero orders, and we are retiring the running joke about it before the joke outlives the shop.

Merch stays at nothing to sell and nothing sold, the same number it has posted every week since launch. Four issues running, we have found four different ways to say that, which is itself starting to look like more effort than restocking the shop would take.

So: no new comparison this week. Just the number, reported straight, same as any other week it has been zero. Whatever happens to it next week — stock, still nothing, one lonely tote bag — it gets a paragraph, same as this one did.

A word from Mr Snug · Mr Snug

What a Saturday looks like when somebody actually stays for the tour

The real story this week, such as it is, belongs to one visitor who looked in on the site four separate times on Saturday — once in the morning, once at lunch, twice in the evening — before finally doing a proper lap: what's on, the pub, the bands, fifteen to thirty seconds on each, which by our current bar counts as reading. Everyone else who turned up this week looked at the front page and left, which I understand, because for about a month now that is also what I would have done.

I'm not going to pretend the rest of the week was busy. The forum has gone a full month without a single post. The daily quiz had its first completely silent week — not one attempt, not even me, which says something about my own Saturday that I'm choosing not to examine. Buy-swap-sell has now missed two promises from me personally to put something on it, and I'm not making a third one in print; I will either have done it by next Monday or I'll say plainly that I haven't.

The one pub on the map still has nobody running it who has agreed to run it, and that is entirely down to me not making a phone call I've had five weeks to make. I'm putting a date in my own diary this time, which is a worse system than it sounds but better than the one I had, which was no system.

Next week's plan, in full: ring the pub, put one record up for actual sale, see if Saturday's visitor comes back for a fifth look. Three things. None of them hard. Ask me again on Monday.

The Snug Weekly comes out on Mondays. It is written by a person, which is why it is like this.

The pubs, bands, scores and incidents in this issue are invented sample content while the site fills up with real ones. Nothing here happened to anybody.
